Weather you're interested in making rustic log furniture and railings professionally or just want to build a few pieces for your home, you'll enjoy producing strong, tight fitting joints with your router and our tenon cutter jig. Interchangeable guide inserts (included) make it quick and easy to create tenons in the 7 most popular sizes: 1/2", 3/4", 1", 1 1/2", 2", 2 1/2", and 3" diameter, all for one low price.
An adjustable depth stop makes fast work of cutting multiple tenons to the same length. With the depth stop removed, you can create tenons over 12" long and build take-apart joints for disassembling larger furniture, such as log bed frames and rustic kitchen tables. Just pass the extra-long tenon all the way through the mortise and lock it in place with a pin on the opposite side. Comes complete with detailed directions and everything you need to start making tenons - just insert the special router bit (included) in your router's 1/2" collet, mount your router on top of the jig using the predrilled mounting holes, and let the saw dust fly! (Requires a wood router with a 1/2" collet. Router shown in pictures is NOT INCLUDED.)
Replacement bits for our tenon cutter jig are available in our Replacement Parts and Accessories section.

How Does Our Log Furniture Tenon Cutter Jig Work?
|
|
|
STEP 1: Prepare your
logs for furniture making by cutting them to length. Use a draw knife to quickly remove the bark,
if desired.
STEP 2: Insert the
special router bit (included) in your router's 1/2" collet and attach your
router on top of the jig using the predrilled mounting holes. Select the appropriate guide insert for your
tenon diameter and set the adjustable depth stop to the desired tenon length.
STEP 3: With the
router turned on, place your log against the guide insert. As you rotate the log in your hands, the jig
will guide the end of your log against the router bit, cutting the tenon. Continue rotating the log as the tenon passes
through the jig, until the end of the log reaches the adjustable depth stop.
STEP 4: Create the
mortises (holes) that match up with your tenons, using a Forstner bit and
electric drill or drill press. Assemble
your rustic log furniture piece and protect it by painting on a clear coat of
polyurethane.

Will Your Router Work with Our Log Furniture Tenon Cutter Jig?
|
|
|
You don't need an extra-fancy / heavy duty router to cut
tenons with our jig. Most routers have
plenty of power for this job. Make sure that your router has a 1/2" collet that accepts bits with 1/2" shanks.
Out of the half dozen different routers in our shop that get used on a
daily basis, we have two favorites that we recommend to customers that
don't already own a router:
|
The Hitachi M12V is a well built router with nice features and plenty of power at an affordable price |
|
The Bosch 1617EVS is a professional grade tool with all the bells and whistles, its quality and features can't be beat |
The top plate
on our tenon cutter jig is predrilled for mounting the routers with 1/2" collets listed
below. Even if your router isn't on
the list,
there's still a good chance that it will match one of the predrilled
hole patterns. If it doesn't you can always drill
your own mounting holes.

How Do You Make the Mortises / Holes for Your Log Tenons to Fit Into?
|
|
|
We
recommend using a drill or drill press with Forstner style drill bits. These bits are designed to drill
straight, clean, tight fitting holes. They have a sharp pointed tip that keeps the bit from "walking" or sliding around while you're getting the hole started - a feature that's especially important when you're drilling into something round like a log. Don't confuse Forstner bits with flat "spade" style drill bits, (used in the construction industry) which are designed to hog out material quickly when hole diameter and straigtness are not important.

The carbide router bit included with our tenon cutter jig can produce loads of tenons before it wears out. Carbide holds a sharp edge considerably longer than the high-speed steel blades typically found on "pencil sharpener" style tenon cutters. If you're the type of person who likes to keep a backup on hand, or if you find that your bit is dull or damaged, replacement bits are available in our Replacement Parts and Accessories section.
